Software development in a nutshell

If you are here, you probably know what software development is and what its role is in an organization. According to IBM, “software development refers to a set of computer science activities dedicated to the process of creating, designing, deploying and supporting software.” This area of work is conducted by programmers, software engineers and software developers, with their roles and responsibilities usually interacting with each other to make the most of a technology and come up with the desired results in terms of software products.

A few statistics

The software development industry, as any other industry, is subjected to continuous change and needs to adapt to the business environment and the changing of technologies and ways of working. Here are a few software development statistics showing where the software industry is and where it’s heading.

  1. Building enterprise software and business automation and eCommerce represent the majority of software projects, with a majority of 84.7%, 53,6% and 38,5%. (source)
  2. The software development industry is expected to reach $1039 billion by 2027, which means a CAGR of $25,54% from 2020 to 2027. That’s a lot, isn’t it? (source)
  3. It is reported that 54% of software engineers are more productive when they work from home. (source)
  4. The most used programming language by developers is JavaScript. (source) At least for now, as the technology developers use can change from one year to another. We’ve all heard of already existing products that want to rewrite the code using a different, modern language, haven’t we?
  5. The most popular development tool used by developers at the moment is represented by source code collaboration tools such as GitHub. (source)
  6. The most popular tech developers are engaged with robotics and mini apps. (source)
  7. A significant trend in software development is the incorporation of artificial intelligence, which keeps changing and impacting different industries all over the world, being able to produce software development more quickly by deep learning and advanced machine learning. (source)
  8. When it comes to managing software development projects, Jira is the tool preferred by organizations from the industry, thanks to its adaptability and customizability options. (source)
  9. A developer’s capacity to adapt to new working environments and to keep learning is the most important hiring factor, with 60% of recruiters placing a huge emphasis on identifying software developers with excellent soft skills. (source)

What’s expected in 2023

If we were asked ten years ago what our expectations were on software development trends for the next years, we probably would have not foreseen that actual state of it, with all its changes and innovations, being able to do way more things than ten years ago, impacting the way of work for many industries and being more dynamic than ever. However, industry experts have some insights on how the software development industry will look like in 2023, anticipating some technological advances and the way in which it will impact the overall business.

  1. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the new reality

At the beginning, only computers and smartphones were connected to the Internet, but as technology is becoming more and more embedded in our lives, we have been using smart appliances in our homes, our cars, at home and in the workplace. So, according to a Forbes article, it’s predicted that there will be more than 43 billion devices in the world that are connected to the Internet, which will dramatically change the way in which we manage and interact with data.

  1. There’s an increased need for Cloud services

They are cheaper, flexible, and they offer high levels of security, companies can store as much data as they need, and they keep the services on 24, which puts Cloud services in the corporate needs of various organizations.

  1. Blockchain gets more and more popular

It is expected to change the way secure applications are developed, while influencing our capacity to assess data integrity and helping with the implementation with the above-mentioned implementation of the IoT by reducing the need for third-party validation of device information, which will make Blockchain a big part of the 2023 software development path.
