The role of soft skills in a post pandemic world

Why soft skills?

When you think of soft skills, there are many abilities to be covered under this concept, from people skills to communication skills and social skills, personality traits, emotional intelligence and many others.

This pandemic has left most of us with a feeling of loss, especially the loss of human touch. We’ve started to work remotely and our days passed behind a computer screen. Our communication skills have been more important than ever because face to face discussions were no longer a possibility, thus we had to ensure the clarity of our message by means of our communication skills. Also, our organisational skills came in place because most of us tend to lose the rhythm while working in the comfort of our own homes. 

Soft skills to be developed

We can’t cover here all the soft skills and their benefits, because there are so many, depending on the company profile and the specific of each job. However, some of them are universal and we all need them in performing daily tasks. 

Time management

As we’ve just mentioned before, especially during this pandemic, time management is priceless. We moved from an 8 hour job at our offices to a context in which people work from a space which was not at all associated with professional duties, so the lines between work and household have become a little blurred now. This is where time management comes into play. 


According to Patrick J. Rottinghaus, “adaptability was an important survival skill even before the pandemic, given all the changes in the economy that were forcing people to shift jobs, move to different cities or switch schools every so often”. Now, we all had to adapt to Zoom meetings and online schools, while staying at home and trying to keep up with our lives, and according to Marcia Reynolds, adaptability is the one which allows us to see possibilities in times of unanticipated change, such as the current pandemic. “Sure, the pandemic could be the apocalypse or it could just be accelerating changes that were going to happen anyway — such as the shift to remote work”, she said. (source)

Also, this is closely related to the idea of flexibility and how we are able to deal with the changes in our professional life, no matter of the global business context. "While being flexible in work was once aligned with geographic mobility, it is now about having an open mindset, being able to work well under pressure, adjusting to new and unexpected deadlines, prioritizing tasks and, in some instances taking on additional responsibilities", Stephanie L. wrote.

Emotional Intelligence

This is one of the soft skills that matter in every context of our lives, from professional to personal duties and every social situation we encounter. The covid 19 has had a huge impact on our emotions, with people getting depressed and having challenges with this major shift. So, especially in this context, the emotional intelligence towards our own personalities and towards the others, facing the same issue, has been vital. 


What else comes to your mind when you think of soft skills? We'd say creativity. We always need creativity to think out of the box, to find solutions and to bring value into brainstorming sessions, and this pandemic has forced a lot of businesses to put creativity to work: "The pandemic forced many businesses and their employees to be creative in circumventing obstacles. Creative thinkers are needed to tackle new challenges as they arise and find new solutions that keep their businesses running". (source)

The post pandemic world calls for a lot of changes and we need soft skills in order to be able to adapt to all of them and moreover to turn them into our new way of working.
